Writers Weekend: Swipe Right

Here’s another shot at Kristen @Coffee and Literary Rage‘s Writers Weekend.

“Welcome to Writers Weekend, your virtual getaway dedicated to all things writing! Join a community of writers as we share our struggles, triumphs, and most of all, our love of the craft. Every other week I’ll post a prompt, whether it’s a list of questions or an open ended inquiry or just a random writing exercise. Write your post, add your link in a comment, and then check out and comment on a few of the other links! You can grab the blog button below (or the banner above!), but please link back.” (Kirsten)

This week’s topic: Swipe Right. Imagine a character using dating apps. What would they say? How would they present themselves? Given that my main character’s in a relationship, I’ll leave Kyra (Porcelain Blurb) alone. However, I select her mother, Vivienne, a four-time unsuccessful seeker of love. She’s been annulled once, divorced 2x and widowed once).

Honestly, she would find dating apps horrid and meant for those too ugly to find love without a computer’s aid. To use them would be beneath her. Yet, if persuaded, she would try anything once.

“Pick a character or two and fill out this profile for them, complete with a profile picture or four. Remember, they’re trying to make themselves look good to potential partners, so answer in their voice, how they would answer.” (Kirsten)

Name: Vivienne Olivia Donaghue-Rees-James-Kingham-Speaks

Height: 5’6

Looking for [men/women/both]: Men

Drinks? Smokes? Does drugs? [never/often/socially/literally all the time]: I enjoy a good wine sip or two, as well as an after-drink smoke.

Religion: Episcopalian

My self-summary: I love the finer things in life, and seek someone willing to share my joy in such aspects. I have two daughters, and while I adore them, a mother needs attention. Are you that person? I am a hopeless romantic. Simply hopeless.

What I’m doing with my life: Raising my daughters. Traveling. Sharpshooting.

I’m really good at…Traveling. Fine dining. Raising my daughters. Sharpshooting.

The first thing people notice about me: My naturally red hair and pale skin. Yes. I detest tanning, though I have daughters with their own natural tans. More on that info later. Yes, my hair color’s real. No need for trips to hair salons for what Mother Nature gave me.

Favorite books, movies, music, and food. I do adore a good Danielle Steele and Jackie Collins novel. Do not tell my daughters. I am a fan of 40s and 50s classics. Why can’t they make films like those anymore? Give me a good ballroom waltz, too. As for food, French food is simply remarkable. I love Creme Brulee.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit: I’ll never tell.

I spend a lot of time thinking about… Why my eldest daughter refuses to cease giving me migraines? Certainly, her behavior could not be a reflection of my parenting, right?

You should message me if…If you long for a lady’s company with immense decorum and home training.

“Okay, back to you the author. You don’t have to answer all of these questions, but they’ll (hopefully!) get you thinking.

  1. How much of this profile is actually true?
  2. Would your character be picky about whose messages they responded to?
  3. Would you date your character?” (Kirsten)
  1. Most of Vivienne’s profile rings true, except not being the cause of her daughter’s rough living. Boy, oh boy!
  2. She would be extremely picky. Obnoxious even.
  3. No. No. No.

“Now, if you want to kick it up a notch, you could include how a chat between two of your characters might go. Who messages first? Who flirts harder? Who initiates meeting?” (Kirsten)

Vivienne would surely give a run to anyone’s money. May God help them!

Have fun, if you wish to participate. Share below, if you do!
